Third ranked Northwest Missouri State lost their first game 44-27 to eighth ranked Abilene Christian.
"So much of the preseason is based on the previous year, we don't put any stock in preseason rankings, or even our regular season rankings. We just keep playing and try to win your conference, if you do that then you are going to get an opportunity to be in the playoffs," Mel Tjeerdsma, head coach of NWMS, said last week before the game.

Ser-NES-ski.
The name isn't that hard to say, but it may take a while for fans to pronounce Mules' quarterback Eric Czerniewski's name if they're seeing it for the first time.
Czerniewski may have people tongue-tied, but during this past Thursday's lightning-delayed showdown with Minnesota State-Mankato, he made sure people knew his name by the end of the night.

RALEIGH, N.C. (MCT) - Duke officials were a bit surprised when, at 6 p.m. EDT on Saturday, about an hour before the scheduled kickoff of their game against James Madison, two men parachuted into Wallace Wade Stadium and landed at the 35-yard line with a game ball.

The USD volleyball team created a buzz this season after producing the best season in its history last year.
All but two players return from last season's team, which qualified for the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Even though most of the team is intact, the team did undergo one major change in the off-season.

Florida International hasn't had a winning season since its inception in 2002. In six years, the Golden Panthers have only won 16 games, three on the road.
"[The Golden Panthers] played hard and played with good effort last year," Hawkeye head coach Kirk Ferentz said. "I think they're just a better team physically now than they were."

It worked with Tom Brady and Drew Henson at Michigan. Florida head coach Urban Meyer found success in 2005 with Tim Tebow and Chris Leak. And now, there's talk of Ohio State using Todd Boeckman and Terrelle Pryor.
Yes, two-quarterback systems - usually featuring a gifted scrambler and a traditional pocket-passer - have worked in the past.

Memorial Stadium has the Sea of Red and its student section - which is black these days.
The Bob Devaney Sports Center has the Red Zone.
Now the NU Coliseum has a student section of its own.
While the newly relocated seating arrangement in section 10 - above the pep band - remains nameless, the hope is to bring in more students and take the energy of the NU Coliseum to a whole new level on game days.

Brett Ferguson is only 5'7", but he never paid attention to what people said. He refused to give up on being a collegiate athlete.
"With my height, size and lack of experience, I was told that I would not be able to play college volleyball," said new Roo volleyball volunteer assistant coach Ferguson.

It's been a while for Cody Glenn.
The senior linebacker hadn't received significant playing time with the Nebraska football team since his sophomore year, when he was known as a bruising running back with plenty of speed.
The following years led to Glenn being overshadowed by senior back Marlon Lucky, former Cornhusker Kenny Wilson and even sophomore I-backs Quentin Castille and Roy Helu Jr.

If it seemed like the Nebraska offense was just a little off on Saturday night, it was probably because they were. But being just a little off still produced nearly 500 yards of total offense as NU quarterback Joe Ganz threw for 345 yards on just 20 completions.

The Coyotes will take on the fifth-ranked Northern Iowa Panthers Saturday, a far cry from last week's NAIA opponent St. Ambrose. It will be the Coyotes' first test as a D-I program, but it won't be the first time they've tussled with a powerful D-I Football Championship Subdivision program.

While neither quarterback commanded the offense with extreme precision on Aug. 30 against the overmatched Maine Black Bears, it's what Jake Christensen didn't show that made Ricky Stanzi the more impressive quarterback. Namely, improvement.

The first thing any UCM fan should do tonight is enjoy this moment.
Fans should find comfort in the optimism of a new Mules' football season. They should enjoy football finally being back in their lives.
They should sit in Walton Stadium under the bright lights and have as much fun as they possibly can.
