USD is literally getting a face-lift. The improvements to the campus are not the construction of simple buildings, but actual architectual works.
Many architects have helped define American architecture over the last 250 years, none more important than Thomas Jefferson in terms of architecture at institutions of higher education.

During her feisty and charismatic speech at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis, Minn. last week, Republican vice presidential pick Sarah Palin assailed Democrats who ridiculed her God and her guns. With God, guns and politics on the mind, Palin seems to have relegated another part of her life to the backburner: her five bizarrely-named children.

The following UWIRE editorial appeared in West Virginia University's The Daily Athenaeum on Aug. 27.
Facebook is out of control.
This isn't a piece to ramble on and on about how it's taking over people's lives; it's to identify the dangers of the social networking Web site.

Decked out in riot gear and brandishing semiautomatic weapons, squads of 25 to 30 highly militarized police officers raided several houses where protesters and journalists were gathering last weekend.
Offering primarily vagaries regarding what they were looking for, the officers proceeded to confiscate numerous computers, personal papers, and political materials. Eventually, the police allowed most of those they had briefly detained at gunpoint to go free but refused to provide any reasoned explanation for their actions.

After a solid 14 years or so of watching every chick flick known to womankind and reading magazines and romance novels, I'm fairly certain that I've learned The Rules of love, dating, relationships and how to please "my man."
On this last category, I'm a near expert: After doing my Cosmo tallies, I know his 2,000 erogenous zones, 1,200 ticklish spots, 800 most "uncensored!" "uncut!" "now disclosed!" wishes in bed and, mostly, I know what he expects out of "his" woman.

China's impressive haul of gold medals at the Beijing Olympics was tarnished somewhat today when it was revealed that "abnormally high levels of lead" were found in the first-place medallions.
The medals, which were supposed to be made entirely of gold, were instead found to be composed of 99 percent lead alloy and coated with a gold-colored lead-based paint.

Liberals are going crazy on the blogs this week. It was recently revealed that Republican vice-presidential hopeful Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol is young, unwed and five months pregnant. One blog, titled Pushback, stated: "While it would be foolish to draw a one-to-one correlation in her daughter's case, does Palin think there's a general connection between teen pregnancy and a lack of sex ed? Does she think that a 17-year-old who finds herself pregnant should be forced by the law to carry it to term? Does she think premarital sex is 'sinful' in any meaningful sense? How sinful?"
The fact that Bristol Palin is pregnant has nothing to do with her mother's politics.

Most Alaskans like Sarah Palin. I know I do. Both as a politician and a person, there's a lot to like.
Despite the fact that we're from different parties, for the 20 months that we've both been in office we've been allies on oil and gas issues, which are important in a state where 85 percent of the government's general revenue comes from oil production.

Citizens want it, politicians talk it and this election cycle can be summed up by it: change.
College campuses are teeming with the desire for a new way to do politics, but will this hype translate into increased turnout for the 2008 elections?
Young adults vote in lower numbers than any other age group.

An education is valuable; therefore, it isn't free.
While the cost of an education is worthwhile, many students have no idea how much debt they have accrued in pursuit of higher learning.
Randy Sell, the director of Financial Aid at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, said when students come into his office, he asks them how much debt they have accumulated and most students do not know.

In today's fast-paced society, the idea of a weekly paper is basically extinct. For most people, news is something they want now, not later, and they want to access it as easily as possible. For weekly papers like The Volante that sit on racks around campus and the community, this could spell demise, unless those papers choose to move one step ahead of the times and start treating their newspapers like a weekly product with daily capabilities.

Over 30 years ago, the Coyote Student Center was bright, shiny and new. This year's freshman class doesn't even know what our beloved CSC looked like. What students have today is only the promise of a still incomplete, state-of-the-art university center.
President Abbott's goal is to transform USD into the best small, publicly funded university in the nation.

This election has me pissed off. When you're faced with a choice between two things, you usually look at the pros and cons, and then make a decision. However, it seems like in this election everyone has just about the same amount of pros and cons.
But first of all, let me say I'm coming out of the closet - the political closet that is.

John McCain selected Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential candidate on Friday, claiming that she is just the right person to fight what he sees as the "same old Washington politics."
This despite the fact that John McCain is the definition of the same old Washington politician, a man who has spent the better half of three decades entrenched in the Republican establishment.

After publishing an article last week on the sexual harassment case ("Tenured professors resign to avoid third investigation" - 08/18/08), it was natural that there would be some comments on our Web site.
What I didn't expect was to have my e-mail account bombarded by anonymous messages from both sides, so perhaps it's best to clear up a few points here.
